5 ways to save money on your power bill this Winter

You know it’s cold when wooly socks are on your wish list, soups are back on the menu and Friday nights are spent on the couch where it’s toasty and warm.

If you’re anything like us, you’ll feel more than the temperature drop – there’ll be a big spike in your power bill too. Not to worry, we’re here to help with our tips for saving money on your power bill this Winter.

1. Get cosy by adding another layer

Just like your mum always said, if you’re cold – pop on a jumper. Or socks or even slippers! A cosy blanket on the couch will also do the trick. Adding another layer may be enough to keep off the chill… and more importantly, the heater.

2. Try energy-efficient light bulbs

LED bulbs last longer, use less energy and produce the same amount of light as a standard light bulb. Switching your light bulbs may be an upfront investment, but your savings, in the long run, will be worth it! Especially during winter when there are fewer daylight hours.

3. Trap in the warmth and keep it consistent

Two words. Insulating curtains. Insulating curtains help to keep the warm air in your home. If you back those up with low, consistent heat, you’ll be able to stay toasty without burning a hole through your wallet.

4. Don’t turn the heater up

Turning the heat up as high as it goes may seem like a great idea at the time, it won’t once the end of month bill comes through. We suggest a lower, consistent temp, rather than ramping it up for a short period of time.

5. Leaks and drafts

Check your home for any leaky taps or drafts. Leaky taps, especially with hot water, could lead up to a big problem. Get these sorted as soon as you can, you’ll notice the drop in your energy usage almost immediately. The same thing goes for drafts. No matter how small, drafts could be leaking the cold air in, and letting the warm air out. Get any gaps filled up with better seals or good old fashioned draft stoppers. We’re a big fan of anything cat shaped.

If you’ve been doing all you can to keep costs low this year, but it’s not doing the trick, try shopping around. Look for a provider with better rates, or pay on time discounts. You’ll be surprised at how much you can save.
