Here’s how to baby-proof your home with tech

If you already have a crawler on your hands, you’re likely well acquainted with the trials and tribulations of baby-proofing a living space.

If you have a soon-to-be crawler, then listen up — you’re about to enter the curiosity stage, a time in your child’s life when everything is endlessly entertaining, especially the back stairs, the sliding door, the cutlery drawer and the swimming pool gate. So now is the time to start baby-proofing your home to make it both liveable and safe for your cherub.

Luckily there are perks to being a modern-day parent, like smart technology that does all the heavy lifting and hard baby-proofing for you. We’ve compiled a list of our favourite gadgets designed to keep your little ones safe and your mind at ease:

Super smart video monitors

We might not have eyes in the back of our heads but we do have smart video monitors. Forget those little radio devices our folks had to use, now we have cameras that are infrared and link straight to our smartphones. Some also come with colour-changing nightlights, lullaby music and air quality sensors – just to make our lives even better.

Really smart vacuums

This might not be an obvious baby-proofing option, but nothing is scarier than a choking hazard. If you get yourself a smart vacuum, like the iRobot Roomba, then not only will your floor be free from objects that might look tasty to a baby but it will also tick one household chore off the list every week.

Flood, leak and bath sensors

These sensors are amazing. Incredible even. They can alert you the moment they detect water, great for keeping your kid away from the bathtub and even the toilet bowl (it can happen!). No one wants their baby going for an unattended splash.

Clever car seats

Yep, you read that right. You can now get smart car seats, such as the Prodigy. This is a high-tech solution to installation anxiety as it has a digital screen telling you when and if your seat is properly attached.

Smart pool guards

Living in Australia, our summers have been known to involve swimming pools. It’s a national past time. And if you have a pool in your backyard, it’s better to be safe rather than sorry. You can use smart devices, such as the PoolGuard In-Ground alarm, that will send you a notification if it detects sudden disturbances or changes that might signify a child falling in.

The Samsung SmartThings system

The best thing about this system is that it will send you an alert if your kid has crawled their way into a part of the house that is out-of-bounds, like the laundry or the garage. It will also tell you if they’ve left the house without permission too. Samsung, onto a good thing.
